Information > Qualifications
Skydiving qualifications can be dived up into two different areas. The first relates to qualifications gained in individual skydiving disiplines. The second is the A-D licence system based on a combination of these individual qualifications and jump numbers.

Cat8: Having worked through the RAPS or AFF training systems, the result is what is called "Cat8," short for Category 8. This is the final level in the student training systems and qualifies a skydiver to jump out solo without an instructor. To gain Cat8 students must demonstrate the ability to successfully dive exit the plane, carry out controlled turns left and right, become stable after a backloop and horizontal movement (tracking).
FS1: After qualifying Cat8 most people immediately start training in formation skydiving (previously called relative work). Through the WARP system, skydivers learn how to control their fall rate and lateral movement in order to stay close to other skydivers in the air. One of the main competitive disciplines, either 4 or 8 way formations are drawn at random from the dive pool of the governing body and competitors have a set time after exiting the plane to arrange into the chosen formations as many times as possible.
CF1: A different kind of relative work to FS, canopy formation is more commenly referred to as CReW (Canopy Relative Work). Here jumps open higher than normal and can do a number of different jumps in competition. One mirrors FS jumping in trying to form as many different canopy formations drawn at random. Another is where team members try to form up into a preselected formation as quickly as possible. Finally jumpers form a stack after exit, then the top canopy must go to the bottom with each repeat a point.
JM1: Allows a skydiver to be in charge of the lift. Are qualified to check out non-student jumpers and their equipment andmust ensure everyone knows what order to exit. Another important component is spotting, picking the correct exit point from the plane, relative to the parachute landing area (PLA). This takes into account wind conditions and ensures that after drift in freefall due to wind, jumpers open upwind next to the PLA allowing them to safely get back. Also must be able to pack.
CH1: Canopy Handling 1 is required by Cat8 skydivers in order to gain their A licence. It requires jumpers to show the ability to do a number of standard parachute techniques using the toggles such as half break turns, using half breaks to extend the range of flight and showing general competance under canopy. Especially important to QUBSC members wishing to use club kit due to the lack of an RSL on all kit. Only A licence jumpers can jump kit which does not have an RSL fitted.
CH2: Canopy handling 2 along with JM1 makes up most of what was previously known as the IC1 qualification. Skydivers must make 5 out of 10 predeclared landings in a circle, 30 m in diameter. Must show the ability to use both front and both rear risers to increase the range of the canopy. Skydivers must also show rear riser turns for use as an avoidance manouvre.
FF1: To gain the FF1 sticker skydivers have to show the ability to fly in a controlled sit/stand position, hench the more commen name of "sit flying". Control fall rate in a sit/stand position. Control forward and backward movement in a sit/stand position. Control turns in both directions in a sit/stand position. Fly relative to others in a sit/stand position.
FF2: Similar to sit flying only the other way round, giving it the more commen name of "head down". Jumps must show the ability to fly in a controlled head down position. Control fall rate in a head down position. Control turns in both directions in a head down position. Fly relative to others in a head down position. Display independent body movement in a head down position such as hand claps.
SS1: Before attempting to skysurf a skydiver must be C licence and be very advanced in freeflying. To gain SS1 a skydiver must be able to jump a board of at least 3 feet in length and deploy in a ‘stand up’ position. Perform a stable ‘surfing down the slipstream’ type exit. Perform a controlled 360 degree turn in both directions whilst upright on the board. Perform a controlled back or front loop on the board and demonstrate forward movement by tracking whilst upright on the board.
SS2: Before training in SS2 skydivers must already be SS1. Then to gain their SS2 sticker they must perform a controlled seated turn of 720 degrees (sit spin), starting and stopping on heading. Perform a controlled ‘helicopter’ spin, rotating a minimum of 3 x 360 degrees but not exceeding 6 complete revolutions. Perform a full 360 degree backloop or frontloop with a half twist from a standing position under control.
CP1: Must be a C licence skydiver with 200 jumps and CH2. Must show the ability to do 90 / 180 / 270 / 360 degree turns above 3000 ft. Then must demonstrate the ability to do 5 consecutive high performance landings using front riser turns, on a straight on approach, 5 making a final turn of 45 - 90 degrees and 5 making a final turn of 90 - 180 degrees.
CP2: Must be D licence jumper with 1000 jumps and CP1. Must have logged 500 high performance landings or 100 in the last 12 months. Must perform safe, high performance runs, over a minimum 185ft long, 30ft wide carving course, that consists of 10ft vertical markers with a defined entry and exit gate, on at least 3 pre-declared consecutive descents.
Licences

A Licence : Category 8 and at least ‘CH-Grade 1’.

Allows a skydiver to jump solo without an instructor, no longer a student you are classifed as an intermediate skydiver. You are no longer required to have an RSL (Reserve Static Line) on any kit you jump.

B Licence : FAI ‘A’ Certificate, 50 descents and at least ‘CH-Grade 2 and JM-Grade 1’.

You are now an experienced skydiver. You may wear a full face helmet, jumpmaster a lift. You are not require to have an AAD (Automatic Activation Device) on any kit you jump.

C Licence : FAI ‘B’ Certificate, 200 descents and at least one further ‘Grade 1’.

You are now cleared to wear any helmet that is acceptable to your CCI, you may begin training in Canopy Piloting and you have reached the minimum requirements to train as a CSI (Category System Instructor)

D Licence : FAI ‘C’ Certificate, and 1000 descents.

D-licence skydivers are the cream of the crop. If its legal then you can try it. You may attempt to skydiver in any discipline without a formal introduction.
However the BPA reccomend that all skydivers receive appropriate training before new techniques are attempted.
